Day 13: Formative assessment tool & something big

So I got back into painting for the first time in something like 10 years this weekend when I made this:

I’m going to get it laminated and post it next to the door out of my classroom, and then I’m going to use it as a formative assessment tool along the lines of this great idea by Pam Wilson.

Also, I had a long chat with one of the students in the science club, who was the only girl to turn up at our most recent meeting. We talked for almost an hour about what we can do to encourage more girls to attend the science club, and came up with a number of good ideas, including having an informal gathering of girls in the hour before science club so that girls would get to work with equipment together exclusively before other students arrive. We also talked about forming a girls coding club that would meet and try to encourage more female interest in computer science. We even brainstormed up the first programming project that the group will work on—a clothes borrowing app. Since out students all live in dorms, girls tend to treat the dorm as one giant closet, which works most of the time, but it would be very helpful if there were a way that girls could easily mark particular outfits for borrowing and track who borrowed them. I’m really excited to see where this group goes.
